Throughout the years we have preached through many books of the Bible, and so here is a catalogue of our sermon series to accompany your own Bible study and reading.

Expository sermons and thematic sermons.

At Hope Church we know that our ultimate source of authority comes from scripture and so we aim for all our sermons to be rooted in scripture. One of the best ways for us to preach through the whole counsel of God, is therefore to preach through books of the Bible and so most of our sermon series, are expository in nature, as we work, chapter by chapter through a book. Sometimes however it's important for us to explore a specific theme in the Bible like the purpose of the Church, sexuality, the Holy Spirit and more, so some of our preaching series are thematic in nature and draw from several books of the bible with one specific lens.

Below you will find links to talks from the Old and New Testament books

and to talks based on specific themes.

Old Testament

Genesis | A Blueprint for Life

Starting from the beginning, Genesis helps us to see God’s intention for us, His purpose for us, and the affect that sin has in our lives.

Today, many people have good intentions for morality, equality, fairness and freedom - these all stem from God’s good design - His blueprint for life.

Exodus | God's Treasured Possession

Throughout this book we see how God draws His people out of slavery and into a relationship with him. He draws them into hope, a future, purpose, freedom, their own land and status. God gives them an identity. All these things he does for His people today - His treasured possession.

Joshua | Walking in the Promises of God

Joshua tells the history of the Israelite nation finally laying claim to the land that God had promised centuries earlier. Today we can look beyond the historical setting and see a God who has given us a unique calling and purpose to fulfil. We can choose to drift aimlessly or with God’s help and His timing, we can walk in His promises

Ruth | God's redemption plan

Every page of the Bible speaks to us of Gods amazing redeeming plan to restore humanity to himself. In the midst of famine, barreness and death, we can wonder how we should cope? In Ruth we are taught, that God is about a work of redemption through his Grace.

Nehemiah | Our Ruins, His Restoration

In the book of Nehemiah we find Jerusalem in ruins. In many ways it was due to Gods people failing to trust Him over many years. Even after God continually draws them back to Him, they persist in their sin and find themselves and their city in ruins. But God is about a great work of restoration, in their lives and in our lives today.

Isaiah | Whom shall you trust

In Isaiah the recurring question that keeps appearing over and over again is: whom shall you trust? We want our church to be established and mature, so as we explore this brilliant old testament book, our prayer is that we increasingly place our trust in him above anything else this life has to offer.

Daniel | Faith in a real world

When Daniel was taken into exile, everything changed, a little like it did for us during the pandemic. Daniel found himself in completely unexpected circumstances and yet he is a wonderful example to us about how to have faith in a real world. Throughout this series we explore how to trust in God through difficult times.

Jonah | The prodigal prophet

Jonah is a great story with so many insights into our heart attitudes, God's compassion and His willingness to forgive those who repent. This is extended to everyone, not just to the people of God. This book challenges us to extend compassion and the gospel to all people, and to see others as God see's them.

New Testament

Mark | The good news of Jesus

In the first verse, Mark outlines his vision for his gospel – “The beginning of the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God”. This book is fast paced, Jesus focused, drawing us into God’s plans to see the Gospel go forth throughout the nations. This book helps us rekindle our love for Jesus and his mission.

John | That you may believe

In John, Jesus makes incredible statements about himself, revealing his glory and power. John 20:31 says “this is written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Growing belief in Jesus, and life in his name, is our prayer for this series.

Acts | Acts of the Church

Acts looks at the work that “Jesus began to do and teach” and that He continues to do ‘through His witnesses (us) by the power of his Holy Spirit, to see the gospel go throughout the world. Jesus’ vision for His church, is much bigger, broader and wider than our vision. We pray that this book will help us get caught up into His plans and purposes.

1 Corinthians | Church as God Intended

Paul wrote the book of 1 Corinthians to a church in Corinth that were in a right mess. Being one of the early churches they seem to get everything wrong, lots of different topics are explored through this book so it gives a great foundation to lots of the challenges we might face today, and to look at what is Church as God intended.

2 Corinthians | Authentic Church

In the letter of 2 Corinthians, the church has overcome many of their challenges, however there is still room for improvement. The good news is that God uses weak and imperfect people to bring about his purposes. We see in this series that an authentic church works together through challenging times.

Galatians | Grace: God's undeserved favour

Grace impacts everything we do - from our relationship with God and others, to how we view ourselves, to the purpose of this grace we’ve received. This undeserved, unmerited, unearned free gift is the best we'll ever receive.

Colossians | Christ in you

Paul's letter to the church in Colossae was a letter sent whilst he was in prison. He wrote to encourage them, address some issues and to challenge them to a greater devotion to Jesus. We see that Christ living in you makes a difference in every area of life.

James | Faith Works

James, the half brother of Jesus, wrote this book with the main focus that Christians shouldn't just talk the talk, but walk the walk. They should be distinct from their culture. Their actions should match their words. They shouldn't just be hearers of the word, but doers too. Our faith should be seen in our works.

Thematic Talks

Sexuality, Gender & Singleness

In this series, we are exploring God’s good design for sex, gender and relationships. We want to be known as a church that follows in the footsteps of Jesus by welcoming everyone whilst being clear on biblical teaching. We'll think about how we can be inclusive for people who are single or who struggle with their sexuality or gender.

This is Church

It's easy for Christians to see all the faults and failings of the church, but Jesus is at work transforming Her. Bride, Flock, Family, Army, Temple, Vineyard and much more. Let's gain confidence from scripture that these biblical pictures

Evangelism | Loving People towards Jesus

Evangelism can be a scary word and so in this 3 part series we consider how, in our culture, in Guildford we can share the good news of Jesus better. From loving people practically and loving people in community, we ultimately want to love people towards Jesus.

The Holy Spirit

Often our theology can be based much more on our experiences than the Bible, this is never more true than when it come to the Holy Spirit. As a church we hold highly the word of God, and because of what it says, we hold in high regard the work of the Holy Spirit. We look at who He is, what He does and how we can encounter Him.

The Beatitudes | Matthew chapter 5

At the start of the sermon on the mount, Jesus gives eight blessings (Matthew 5:3–12), outlining virtues like humility, mercy, and peacemaking. To these people the Kingdom of Heaven is promised and so their is great hope to be found in these verses for those who are down hearted.

Serving the Poor | Hope Works

Hope Works is the name of the group of organisations that we support as a church. During this series we explore in turn each of these organisations and find out more about their impact in our community.

Lifestyle | Faster, Higher Stronger

The bible speaks a lot about how Christianity is like being an athlete. We all have our race to run and are called to fix our eyes on Jesus. So we looked at what it means to be diligent in training, running with perseverance, enduring hardships and "pressing on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Ph. 3:14
